Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Blood is every ones lifeline , it travels around the body in in liquid form , in specially designed tubes called blood vessels

Clots deserve attention and respect , because they not only send chills down everyone’s spine but also have capacity to kill instantly !

Risk Factors For Blood Clots

  • Prolonged sitting , often the case when you take long journeys in an airplane, a train, or a car.
  • Prolonged bed rest , often the case after surgery or long term illness.
  • Infections , COVID is a popular one.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Smoking.
  • Obesity.
  • Birth control pills.
  • Cancer.
  • Major surgery.
  • Age , especially over the age of 60.
  • A family history of blood clots.

In Which Deep Veins Do Clots Form ?

  1. Arms And Legs : 90% Of the clots.
  2. Veins In The Pelvis.
  3. Veins In The Abdomen (Tummy)
  4. Veins In The Neck
  5. Veins In The Brain ; Called Cerebral venous thrombosis

Symptoms Of Acute ( Fresh) DVT

  1. Severe Swelling in the affected leg or arm.

2. Severe pain in the affected leg or arm.

The affected Leg (arrow) is certainly painful

3. Change in colour of the affected leg or arm.

The affected leg ( arrows ) is now red , and am sure you can feel how warm and painful this leg is.

4. The affected leg or arm is usually warmer than the normal side.

5. Pain in the affected arm or leg.

Treatment Of Acute DVT

Blood thinning medication

Also known as anticoagulants ; Usually given as injections or tablets.
Unfortunately with extensive clots that span the entire leg , blood thinners only may not be sufficient , technology now allows us help the body get rid of massive clots.

Sucking Out Blood Clots From The Body

Also called DVT thrombectomy , technology now allows us to get into the affected blood vessels and suck the clot out , at times this is the only descent option one has.

Massive Fresh Clots Sucked Out Of The Body
Catheter Directed Thrombolysis (CDT)

Again , with technology , a small tube is inserted into the clot , so that clot busting drugs are delivered directly into the clot !

This brings down the time and dose of drug needed to break down extensive blood clots.

A tube ( arrow) with jets of fluid gushing out , when placed a cross the clot , jets of clot bursting drugs are directly delivered into the clot , which rapidly dissolves the clots.

No all blood clots are life threatening , but some are , treatment options now extend beyond blood thinners.
