Liver Abscess Drainage

A liver abscess is a pus filled swelling in the the liver.

An abscess in the liver is a serious condition , in fact it is potentially fatal.

Causes Of Liver Abscess

1. Abdomen (tummy ) infection
2. Infection in the bile system
3. Infections in bleed
4. Liver Trauma

Symptoms Of Liver Abscess

  • Pain in the right upper abdomen (more common) or throughout the abdomen (less common)
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • General Body Weakness

How Do I Confirm That I Have A Liver Abcess ?

They look typical on modern ultrasound scans.  A CT scan my be done if ultrasound is not conclusive.

Treatment Of Liver Abscess

A liver abscess can be drained in a number of ways ;


A small needle may be inserted through the skin into the abscess to completely aspirate it.

Abscess aspiration with a needle and syringe.

For sizeable abscess , a small flexible tube is inserted through the skin to drain the abscess, usually for 5 to 7 days.

Owing to the seriousness of a liver abscess , oral medications are also given for a few weeks.

Oral drugs are needed for a few weeks

A liver abscess is potentially life threatening liver infection , but it can be cured if effectively treated.
